A team cannot be fielded if there is no
volunteer to take the reins and be the coach. Each year there is some
scrambling trying to get sufficient coaches for all the teams and
occasionally delays in organizing some of the teams. Many of the
coaches have not had any soccer experience prior to coaching, so do not
let the lack of experience deter you.
The NJSL views the coaches as vital
elements in the continued success of the league and works hard to
recruit coaches and to make available to coaches many instructional
tools to develop and improve their skills. Each year, prior to the
start of the NJSL season, a coaching clinic is held that is taught by an
experienced NJSL coach.
Also, the NJSL provides video tapes,
books on coaching and tactics. If needed, experienced NJSL coaches and
Board members can provide on-field help to new coaches for the first
practice sessions plus provide help on organizing and planning
practices. Contact an NJSL Board member if you are coaching and
need some help getting started, or you can direct your questions to our
Director of Coaching at

IMPORTANT NOTE: “Coach”
is a noun without gender. Spouses and friends of coaches and assistants
can fill in as required and make a big difference in how a practice
turns out. Participate and learn the sport with the kids.
