The NJSL is a late summer, early fall
age-based recreational soccer league with youth players assigned to
teams that span 1,2,3 or 4 year age brackets. These categories are
subject to change yearly based on the number of participants who
register. Mixed teams, where both boys & girls are assigned to teams
are used from ages 5 to 18. Teams for girls only have typically started
at age 8 and continue to age 14. Girls 15 years of age and older and
ages 5, 6 and 7 play on mixed teams. Each year’s registration form
gives the guidelines for available groupings (remember that even this is
subject to change). Ages 5 (Soccer Mites), is single age teams with
6&7’s, 8&9’s, 10&11’s, 12&13’s and 14-18 rounding out the normal mixed
team age brackets. Teams for girls only have been ages 8&9, 10&11, 12
through 14.
The 5 years old have mandatory parental
participation programs where parents (or other qualified adult)
participate along with their children. The 5 years old players do not
have practices, they play games only on Saturdays. The normal number of
games has been 7 for 5 year olds and 9 games for ages 6 -18 ( 1 to 2
practices weekly). Practice sessions normally start in early August
with the first game in late August.
